Project HOPE is a multi-site, NIH-funded study within the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN); San Francisco DPH led the clinical and intervention team for the trial, although the trial did not take place in San Francisco and the Principal Investigator was Dr Lisa Metsch. Project HOPE sought to address issues around HIV-infected persons who delay seeking care until their disease has progressed to require acute treatment. These patients may cycle in and out of public hospitals, and may not receive optimal HIV primary care; many use illicit drugs and may fail to follow up in HIV outpatient clinics. Project HOPE compares three strategies for linking and retaining hospitalized HIV-infected substance users to HIV primary care and substance use treatment.
